Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration has approved a financial aid package for truck drivers, farmers, and fishers grappling with surging fuel costs. This move comes in response to ongoing trucker protests in southern Italy, which have disrupted supply chains and led to shortages in shops and markets. Meloni emphasized that while peaceful protests are respected, intimidation tactics and illegal road blockades will not be tolerated.
Meloni condemned the recent incidents involving threats towards truck drivers and damage to vehicles, labeling them as intimidation rather than legitimate forms of protest. She asserted that the government is committed to enforcing the law to safeguard the movement of goods, essential for maintaining the country’s supply chains.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has been tasked with addressing requests from various transport, farming, and retail associations to ensure smooth delivery of supplies to businesses and consumers. In addition, the government aims to curb price speculation, which could exacerbate the impact of these disruptions on households and businesses.
The newly approved financial support for farmers and fishers will supplement existing assistance for the road transport sector. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle rising fuel costs and protect vital supply networks.
Meloni reiterated that the greatest burden of disrupted transport networks falls on ordinary citizens, workers, and businesses. She assured that the government would continue to engage with peaceful protesters and seek effective solutions to the current challenges.
