Mississippi state officials have granted a crucial air permit to Elon Musk’s xAI, allowing the company to operate a 41-turbine power plant in Southaven. The decision, made by the MDEQ Permit Board, provides the energy needed to run the company’s Colossus 2 AI supercomputer. This permit is the latest step in Musk’s effort to rapidly scale his artificial intelligence company.
The turbines are designed to solve the “power bottleneck” that often delays large-scale AI projects. By burning methane gas on-site, xAI can generate enough electricity to power the 555,000 GPUs used to train the Grok AI model. This “behind-the-meter” strategy allows for a 19-day buildout cycle that traditionally would take four years.
The decision has met with fierce resistance from the NAACP, which has labeled the project an example of environmental injustice. Residents in Southaven have complained that the facility was built in a residential area without proper notice or public input. The group is particularly concerned about the impact of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter on the local community’s respiratory health.
Environmental advocates have also criticized the timing of the permit, which was issued just before a major election. They argue that this hindered the ability of local citizens to engage with regulators and express their concerns. The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) has called for a more thorough review of the plant’s health impacts before any further expansion is allowed.
While the legal battle continues, xAI is pushing ahead with the $20 billion “Macrohardrr” facility, which will be its third in the area. Governor Tate Reeves has championed the project as a transformative opportunity for the state’s economy. However, the ongoing lawsuit from the NAACP serves as a reminder that the path to becoming an AI hub is fraught with social and environmental challenges.
