Strong bones are often linked to consuming milk or taking calcium supplements, yet calcium is merely one factor in maintaining a healthy skeletal system. Despite having adequate calcium levels, many people still suffer from osteoporosis, experience low-impact bone fractures, or face ongoing joint and muscle weakness. The overall health of bones depends on a variety of elements, including nutrition, physical activity, hormones, muscle strength, and early diagnosis. Dr. Rohit Jain, an orthopedic consultant at Regency Health in Lucknow, emphasized the multifaceted needs of bones during a recent discussion.
While calcium plays a pivotal role in providing mineral support to bones, it is ineffective without the proper intake of vitamin D, according to Dr. Jain. Proteins are crucial too, as they form the structural framework for mineral deposition in bones. Other vital nutrients such as magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin K also play significant roles in maintaining bone quality.
Modern lifestyle choices have subtly increased the risk of poor bone health. Prolonged desk work, limited outdoor activities, insufficient protein consumption, and a reliance on processed foods can gradually weaken the musculoskeletal system. To counteract these risks, certain daily habits can help bolster bone strength.
Engaging in physical activity is essential for promoting bone health. Weight-bearing exercises such as brisk walking, stair climbing, resistance training, and yoga apply mechanical stress to bones, encouraging bone formation. Dr. Jain pointed out that detrimental habits like smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and a sedentary lifestyle accelerate bone loss, making bones more prone to fractures from minor falls.
