Bulgaria’s national football team is set to face Luxembourg as it navigates a transitional phase with a new generation of players. The team, currently ranked 85th in the FIFA world rankings, is seeking to improve beyond past achievements and move forward from the era of its famed players like Hristo Stoichkov, Dimitar Berbatov, and Krasimir Balakov.
Led by head coach Aleksandar Dimitrov, Bulgaria has experienced mixed results since his appointment in September of last year, tallying three wins, one draw, and four losses. Among the notable victories was a significant win over Georgia during World Cup qualifiers, showcasing the potential of the team’s emerging talents.
Midfielder Ilia Gruev stands out as a key player in the current lineup, having joined the English Premier League club Leeds United in 2023 after accumulating 33 appearances in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen. Forward Lukas Petkov is also anticipated to play a crucial role in bolstering Bulgaria’s attacking lineup. Petkov, 25, currently plays for SV Elversberg after having stints with FC Augsburg and Greuther Fürth.
In recent competition, Bulgaria and Luxembourg faced off in the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League, where Bulgaria finished second in their group but subsequently lost both playoff matches against Ireland.
