WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for Phone-Free, Secure Messaging Innovation

Date:

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that lets users communicate without disclosing their phone numbers, through the use of usernames. This privacy-enhancing update is anticipated to be globally available later this year. Users now have the opportunity to reserve a distinctive username prior to the full rollout of the feature. Once the update is active, users can opt to share their usernames instead of phone numbers when initiating new conversations.

To access this feature, users need to update the WhatsApp app and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. Notifications will be sent to users once the feature is accessible in their specific region. Significantly, WhatsApp has decided against introducing a public directory for username searches. This means only individuals who know a user’s exact username can contact them, a measure designed to minimize spam and unwanted messages.

Further enhancing user control, WhatsApp is also offering an optional username key that can be shared to manage who is permitted to start conversations. The company emphasizes that the use of usernames is entirely optional, allowing users to continue using their phone numbers if they choose.

This update is particularly beneficial for creators, businesses, and organizations that aim to maintain consistent identities across services offered by Meta Platforms. It may also facilitate the reservation of matching usernames on other platforms where available, providing a unified presence across Meta’s digital ecosystem.
