Iran Criticizes Qatar for Technological Delays in Missing Pilots Investigation

Date:

Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming it is hindering efforts to uncover the fate of three Iranian pilots who Tehran alleges disappeared during a recent conflict. In response, Qatar has firmly denied these allegations and refuted any claims of detaining the pilots. According to Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official from the Iranian armed forces, an Iranian Air Force expert team has been awaiting clearance for months to travel to Qatar to investigate the situation. Bagherzadeh urged Doha to grant permission for the team’s visit and appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross to pursue the issue.

Previously, Iran announced the recovery of the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who was reportedly killed in an attack involving the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. Meanwhile, Majed al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, categorically denied any detention of Iranian pilots. He explained that Qatar had contacted the pilots following an alleged violation of Qatari airspace and had resorted to defensive measures when attempts to communicate with the pilots went unanswered.

Qatar announced that its search and rescue teams had conducted operations to locate the pilots and their remains, further stating that it had coordinated with Iran to facilitate the transfer of the remains of one pilot that was recovered. According to Qatari authorities, Iranian officials were invited back in April to dispatch a team to receive additional information regarding the search and rescue efforts. However, Qatar noted that there had been no response from the Iranian side to this invitation.

This dispute unfolds against a backdrop of ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other countries in the region following the outbreak of conflict earlier in the year. Qatar has been a significant diplomatic player in the efforts to defuse these tensions and has facilitated communication between the involved parties.
