Italy’s Meloni Reaffirms Support for Ukraine Amid Coalition Disagreements

Date:

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reiterated her unwavering support for Ukraine, acknowledging potential political repercussions but emphasizing that Italy’s stance will not change. In a recent interview for a forthcoming book, Meloni addressed the potential discord among Italian voters regarding the continued military and economic aid to Kyiv. Despite these challenges, she asserted that supporting Ukraine aligns with Italy’s national interest.

Meloni highlighted the importance of upholding an international order grounded in law, rather than yielding to military dominance. She warned that allowing powerful nations to impose their will through force would ultimately be detrimental to Italy. Her remarks come amid internal disagreements within Italy’s governing coalition over the country’s assistance to Ukraine.

Deputy Prime Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini has repeatedly expressed skepticism about Italy’s policy, indicating his desire to terminate economic and military support for Ukraine. In contrast, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has reaffirmed Italy’s dedication to supporting Ukraine, suggesting that a new assistance package is in the works.

The differing views within the coalition underline the internal divisions on the issue. Nonetheless, Meloni has made it clear that as long as she leads, Italy’s support for Ukraine will persist. Her steadfast commitment highlights the delicate balance she must maintain between political unity at home and Italy’s strategic interests abroad.
