Luxembourg has taken a significant step in managing its water resources by initiating its first nationwide drinking water vigilance phase. This move comes in response to prolonged periods of high temperatures coupled with below-average rainfall, which have led to an uptick in water usage and mounting stress on public water supplies. The government’s decision to activate this alert aims to safeguard drinking water reserves and stave off potential shortages. Although the current national campaign is dependent on voluntary compliance, several municipalities have already imposed mandatory restrictions on water usage.
In Esch-sur-Alzette, one of the municipalities implementing strict measures, residents must adhere to prohibitions against non-essential uses of water. These restrictions include bans on washing cars outside of professional car washes, cleaning pavements and building exteriors, filling private swimming pools and ornamental ponds, operating fountains that do not recirculate water, cooling food or drinks under running water, and watering parks, sports fields, and other green spaces except for newly planted areas. The measures are designed to conserve water, and businesses that rely on water for their operations are exempt from these rules. However, those who violate the local regulations face fines ranging from €25 to €250.
The Water Administration has also highlighted that river levels across the country have dropped to critically low points. As a result, the extraction of water from rivers is now prohibited nationwide, with the exception of the Moselle River. Authorities continue to urge residents to play their part in water conservation efforts by adopting habits such as taking shorter showers, running washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads, minimizing garden watering, and cutting down on unnecessary outdoor water use.
Officials emphasize that these conservation measures could be vital in preventing the need for more stringent restrictions should the dry conditions persist. The cooperative efforts of the public are deemed essential in preserving the country’s water resources during this period of climatic challenge.
