The EU Council’s approval on September 22 to prolong these sanctions aims to provide greater stability to the framework, as previous extensions were for shorter periods. The measures include asset freezes and travel restrictions, as well as prohibitions on providing funds to those listed. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, expressed dissatisfaction with the EU’s decision, describing it as unacceptable and maintaining that the conditions leading to the original sanctions remain unchanged. The removal of Usmanov and Fridman is seen as a potential weakening of international efforts to pressure Russia economically and politically.
