In a strong rebuke, Italy has denounced Russia following a drone attack that reportedly targeted a residential building in Romania, close to the Ukrainian border. The incident resulted in injuries to two civilians and has heightened apprehensions about regional security stability.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni labeled the drone strike as an extremely grave incident, emphasizing its occurrence within Romania, a nation that holds membership in both the European Union and NATO. Meloni highlighted the broader implications of the attack, underscoring the persistent threat to civilian lives and the overarching risks it poses to European security. In her statement, she conveyed solidarity with Romania’s government and the individuals impacted by the event.

Echoing these sentiments, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani urged Russia to commit earnestly to efforts aimed at establishing a just and lasting peace. He reiterated Italy’s steadfast support for Romania during this challenging time. Concurrently, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto characterized the attack as a perilous and reckless escalation, asserting that the security of any NATO and EU member is a collective concern shared by all allies.

The attack took place in the Romanian city of GalaÈ›i, near the border with Ukraine. According to Romanian authorities, the drone strike resulted in injuries to two individuals when it hit a residential structure. This incident has amplified fears among European leaders regarding the possibility of the conflict extending beyond Ukraine’s boundaries, potentially affecting surrounding nations.

The recent developments have further emphasized the importance of solidarity and preparedness among the allies in addressing the evolving security challenges in the region.
