Italy’s annual inflation rate surged to 5.4% in October, a significant increase from 4.2% in September, reaching its highest point since August 2023. This sharp rise is primarily attributed to escalating energy prices, which have been influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions, notably the conflict involving Iran.
The energy sector witnessed a dramatic spike, with the annual growth rate of energy prices jumping from 22.6% in September to 31.4% in October. Notably, prices for regulated energy products soared from 25.8% to a staggering 59.5%, while non-regulated energy prices also saw a considerable rise from 22.5% to 29.4%.
Inflationary pressures were further exacerbated by increasing food prices. The inflation rate for unprocessed food climbed to 7.5% from 5.5% in the previous month. Processed food and alcohol prices saw a marginal annual decline of 0.2%, slightly less than the 0.6% drop recorded earlier.
Transportation-related services also experienced inflationary impacts, as prices rose from 1.6% to 3.1%. This broad-based increase highlights the persistent pressures on Italian households struggling with rising living costs.
Overall, Italy’s consumer price index saw a 0.9% increase in October compared to the previous month, underscoring the ongoing strain on household budgets due to the climbing costs of essential goods and services.
