Luxembourg City is seeking to bolster security measures in its city center by expanding its CCTV surveillance network. Mayor Lydie Polfer has formally requested approval from Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden to install additional cameras, a move supported in principle by the municipal council. The specifics, including the number and placement of these surveillance tools, remain under discussion.
The police will conduct an assessment to determine security needs and identify key areas where the cameras would be most effective. Mayor Polfer acknowledged that while CCTV cannot prevent every crime, it plays a crucial role in aiding investigators by helping to identify suspects and reconstruct criminal incidents.
This initiative follows a recent expansion of surveillance systems in the Gare district and Bonnevoie, driven by increasing security concerns and a rise in reported offences. Deputy Mayor Maurice Bauer emphasized the city’s commitment to equipping its police force with the necessary resources to maintain public safety.
Local business owners and residents have echoed calls for stronger security measures, particularly to combat pickpocketing and similar offences. Proponents of the CCTV expansion argue that the presence of cameras can deter criminal activity and that the footage captured can be invaluable in police investigations.
