Luxembourg Scrutinizes Amazon’s Tech-Driven Operations on National Day Shifts

Date:

Amazon has come under fire from Luxembourg’s Independent Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) for its decision to have a select number of employees work at its Kirchberg site on the country’s National Day holiday, June 23. The company explained that some employees had volunteered for the shift since the holiday overlapped with its annual Prime Day activities. Amazon assured that only a small group of workers were involved and emphasized that all participating employees would receive compensation in line with Luxembourg’s labor regulations.

The OGBL has taken a firm stance against Amazon’s move, arguing that public holidays should generally be reserved for all workers, apart from those in critical public services like healthcare and emergency response. The union stresses that while participation may be voluntary, this does not absolve employers from their legal obligations to provide holiday pay as mandated by law.

In response to the situation, the union has advised employees who worked on June 23 and are not in management positions to diligently check their pay slips. The goal is to ensure they receive the additional compensation they are legally entitled to for working on a national holiday.

Furthermore, the OGBL has encouraged any workers who discover discrepancies in their holiday pay to promptly contact their human resources department or staff representatives. The union is committed to assisting employees in securing their rightful compensation and ensuring that labor laws are upheld.
