Tech Advancements May Shield Wall Street’s Bull Market from Iran War Inflation

Date:

The ongoing conflict in Iran is exerting new inflationary pressures in the United States, primarily by escalating energy prices and disrupting global supply chains. This situation raises concerns that the Federal Reserve might be compelled to maintain or increase interest rates, potentially jeopardizing Wall Street’s robust stock-market rally. The most immediate impact has been felt around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy. Disruptions there have led to a significant spike in crude oil prices, consequently driving up gasoline and diesel costs for American consumers and contributing to the broader inflationary trends.

While hopes for diplomatic negotiations have somewhat eased oil prices, other inflationary factors persist. The costs associated with transportation, disrupted supply chains, and petroleum-based products continue to exert upward pressure on the prices of goods and services. The conflict’s ramifications extend beyond energy, potentially affecting agriculture and technology sectors as well. Fertilizer supply disruptions could inflate food-production costs, and shortages of helium, crucial for semiconductor manufacturing, might raise costs in the chip industry.

A significant concern for the Federal Reserve is the persistence of core inflation, which remains high even as energy prices show signs of cooling. If underlying inflation does not subside, the central bank’s capacity to lower interest rates could be limited. In fact, persistent price pressures might necessitate a more stringent monetary policy. Elevated interest rates pose additional challenges, particularly for the technology and AI sectors, where companies are heavily investing in infrastructure, data centers, and chips. More costly borrowing could decelerate investments and exert pressure on the highly valued AI stocks.

AI-related firms have been pivotal to the recent US stock-market rally. Hence, any slowdown in AI investment or a decline in the valuations of high-growth technology firms could negatively impact major financial indexes. The core issue for investors is determining whether the inflation driven by the conflict will be a temporary disturbance or will permeate the broader economy. Should supply disruptions continue and core inflation remain elevated, higher interest rates might create a more challenging environment for Wall Street, potentially threatening the current bull market’s momentum.
