PAL-V, a company based in the Netherlands, has achieved a significant milestone in its quest to commercialize its Liberty flying car. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has granted the company the green light to start producing aviation components for this innovative vehicle. This approval marks a crucial step towards the Liberty’s journey to becoming a commercially viable flying car.
With this authorization, PAL-V can now manufacture the aircraft-specific parts of the Liberty, a three-wheeled vehicle that merges road and air travel capabilities. The next critical phase involves obtaining full certification for the Liberty as an aircraft, a move that PAL-V anticipates completing by 2028. Achieving this certification would enable the company to legally operate the flying car in the skies.
The PAL-V Liberty is designed to function both as a conventional road vehicle and a flying machine equipped with a retractable rotor and propeller. While it can drive like an ordinary car, its rotor system can be deployed for flight. However, unlike a helicopter, the Liberty requires a runway for takeoff and landing, as it cannot perform vertical takeoffs.
To drive and fly the Liberty, individuals must possess both a driving licence and a pilot’s licence. The vehicle can reach speeds of approximately 160 km/h on the road and has a flying range of about 500 km, making it a versatile mode of transport. The starting price of the Liberty is around €299,000, excluding taxes and other expenses. PAL-V reports strong demand, with the first 250 units already sold, including orders from the Dutch fire brigade.
If PAL-V secures the final aviation certification as planned, the company could begin deploying its flying cars by 2028, ushering in a new era of personal air travel. This progress underscores the growing interest and potential for flying cars in revolutionizing transportation.
