Luxembourg Lags in Adopting Innovative Renewable Electricity Technologies in EU

Date:

In 2025, Luxembourg found itself among the least performing countries in the European Union for renewable electricity consumption, according to the latest data from Eurostat. Despite a general increase in renewable energy usage across the EU, Luxembourg reported that only 23.3% of its gross electricity consumption came from renewable sources. This figure placed the nation just ahead of Czechia and Malta, who ranked lowest in the bloc.

Overall, renewable energy made up 20.2% of Luxembourg’s gross final energy consumption, reinforcing its position as one of the lower achievers in the EU. Meanwhile, the European Union as a whole saw renewable energy contribute to 26.2% of its gross final energy consumption in 2025, a significant rise from 9.6% in 2004. Ambitiously, the EU has set a target to increase this share to 42.5% by the year 2030, aiming to bolster its commitment to sustainable energy practices.

Leading the way in the EU, Sweden reported a remarkable 65.4% of its overall energy consumption derived from renewable sources. This impressive figure positioned Sweden at the forefront of renewable energy use within the bloc, followed closely by Finland and Denmark, who also demonstrated strong commitments to renewable energy.

Austria emerged as the leader in renewable electricity consumption, with over 90% of its electricity generated from renewable sources. This achievement underscores Austria’s significant investment and reliance on renewable energy technologies, setting an example for other EU countries striving to enhance their renewable energy portfolios.
